ALBION IRON WORKS RENEWABLES CIC

Community Energy Infrastructure & Scalable Microgrid Solutions

Executive Overview

Albion Iron Works Renewables CIC is a community-focused renewable energy organisation based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The CIC has established a working community energy model comprising 11 properties, supported by solar photovoltaic generation and battery storage.

The system demonstrates how locally generated renewable energy and energy storage can be combined to provide practical benefits to a community while supporting the transition towards lower-carbon energy.

Directors & Network Capabilities

The Directors bring extensive experience and established networks within the construction, property, and development sectors. These relationships provide access to relevant technical expertise, contractors, suppliers, property owners, and potential community partners.

This existing network, combined with the Directors' wider involvement in community activities, provides a strong platform from which to identify and engage with additional communities interested in adopting renewable energy and energy storage solutions.

National Scalability & Long-Term Vision

The combination of an operational community energy installation, construction and development expertise, established industry networks and community engagement capability.

This gives Albion Iron Works Renewables CIC a strong position to support the development, testing and eventual commercial and community adoption of innovative renewable energy solutions.

The Halifax Operational Testbed

The organisation provides a strong real-world environment in which to develop, test and demonstrate innovative approaches to community renewable energy, energy storage and local energy management.

Live 11-Property Infrastructure: An active, real-world deployment providing an operational foundation for performance monitoring and user requirement analysis.

Multi-Vector Integration: Practical integration of Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), modern Heat Pumps, and Smart EV Chargers.

Smart HEMS (Home Energy Management): Deployed to maximize individual household benefits and enable Consumer-Led Flexibility (CLF) services across the local grid.

Smart CEMS (Community Energy Management): Aggregates community-wide energy resources to enable peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, optimize shared local benefits, and balance local network power flows to prevent grid congestion.

Innovate UK Funding & Smart HEMS Deployment Roadmap

Albion Iron Works Renewables CIC has submitted formal proposals under current Innovate UK funding calls, with final grant outcomes scheduled for announcement on 28 October 2026.

In alignment with upcoming Innovate UK due diligence procedures and ongoing community development, AIWR CIC is advancing key installation and operational case studies within the Halifax testbed:

Smart HEMS Installation Cases: Documenting household Smart HEMS deployments to demonstrate real-time load management, heat pump integration, and Consumer-Led Flexibility (CLF) tracking.

Community P2P Energy Sharing Trials: Establishing operational baselines for Smart CEMS resource sharing and local network power flow balancing ahead of post-funding scaling.
